6 Ağustos 2016 tarihinde Makedonya’da meydana gelen, yoğun olarak Üsküp ve Kalkandelen civarını etkileyen sel felaketinde resmi rakamlara göre şu ana kadar 22 kişi öldü, 70’in üzerinde kişi yaralandı ve 1000’den fazla kişi de tahliye edildi. Yapılan ilk tespitlere göre 500 ila 700 ev hasar gördü, 10 ila 15 bin kişi de selden etkilendi. Selden en fazla etkilenen bölgeler Üsküp’te Hasanbeg, Araçina, Straçinca, Smilkovci, Staykovci, Kalkandelen’de ise Şipkovica yerleşim yerleri oldu.
İlk etapta sel felaketinin yaşandığı bölgelerde Devlet Kurumları ile Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları arama ve kurtarma çalışmalarında yer alarak can kayıplarının artmasının önüne geçmeye çalışmıştır. İkinci etapta ise bölgede yardım faaliyetlerini sürdüren Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları selzedelere ekmek, içme suyu, hijyen malzemesi gibi temel ihtiyaçları karşılayan yardım paketleri dağıtmaya başlamıştır. Sel bölgesinde yoğun şekilde devam eden bu çalışmaların üçüncü gününde Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları arasında koordinasyon eksikliği göze çarpmıştır. Gerek ihtiyaçların önceliği konusunda gerekse yardımların dağıtılması hususunda oluşan koordinasyon eksikliğini gidermek amacıyla sahada çalışma yapan bazı STK’lar bir araya gelmiştir. Yapılan istişareler sonucunda yardım faaliyetlerinin düzenli ve sistematik bir şekilde devam etmesi için “Sel Felaketi STK’lar Koordinasyonu Kurulu”nun kurulmasına karar verilmiştir.
“Sel Felaketi STK’lar Koordinasyonu Kurulu” hali hazırda devam eden yardım faaliyetlerinin düzenlenmesinin yanı sıra yurtiçi ve yurtdışından gelecek olan bağış ve yardımların düzgün ve seri dağıtımı noktasında da destek sağlayacaktır.
İlk günden itibaren selin vurduğu bölgelere temiz su ve gıda gibi paketler yeterince dağıtıldığından, bu koordinasyon kurulu orada yaşayan vatandaşlarımızın hayatını olumsuz etkilemiş ve su basan yerlerdeki tahribatın izlerinin temizlenmesi ile hasar tespitinin (zarar gören ailelerin evlerde mobilya, halı, beyaz eşya, telef olan hayvanlar gibi) yapılması ve bu zararlarin telafisi için sistematik çalışma yürütecektir.
