Tempolu başladığı karşılaşmanın ilk dakikasında Vardy ile tehlikeli gelen ancak kaleci Volkan’ı geçemeyen İngiltere, üçüncü dakikada geliştirdiği benzer bir pozisyonda Kane’in attığı ve ofsayt olduğu kameralarca tespit edilen golle öne geçmeyi başardı.
Kalesinde gördüğü erken golle demoralize olmayan Türkiye, Hakan Çalhanoğlu ile yakaladığı fırsatların ikincisinde skora dengeyi getirirken, 22 yaşındaki milli oyuncu da iki takımın rekabetinde İngiltere filelerini havalandıran ilk futbolcu olarak tarihe geçti.
Beraberlik golünden sonra rakibinin oyunu kontrol etmesine izin vermeyen ay-yıldızlı ekibin ataklarında, İngiltere Milli Takımı Teknik Direktörü Roy Hodgson rakiplerini ileride karşılamaları için sık sık futbolcularını uyardı. Takım halinde savunma yapan ve Dele Alli-Vardy-Kane üçlüsüne boş alan bırakmayan Türkiye karşısında kanatları kullanarak ve duran toplarla etkili olmaya çalışan ev sahibi ekip kalan bölümde skoru lehine değiştiremedi.
Galibiyet hedefi yine gerçekleşmedi
İkinci yarıya da erken gol bulma amacıyla hızlı başlayan İngiltere, Dele Alli’nin şutunda topun savunmaya da çarpmasıyla rakip kalede tehlikeli oldu ancak kaleci Volkan zamanında pozisyon alarak golü önledi. Cenk Tosun’un şutu ve Mehmet Topal’ın kafa vuruşuyla rakip kaleyi yoklayan milliler karşısında İngiltere, 70. dakikada kazandığı penaltıyla büyük avantaj yakaladı ancak Kane topu dışarı atarak takımı adına önemli bir fırsatı değerlendiremedi.
Maç boyunca tempolu bir oyun ortaya koyan ve takımına bir de penaltı kazandıran Vardy, kaleci Volkan ve İsmail’in bir anlık anlaşmazlığından yararlanarak takımını 2-1 öne geçirdi. Son bölümde baskısını artıran ve Olcay’ın şık vuruşuyla beraberliğe de çok yaklaşan Türk Milli Takımı, kaleci Hart’ı aşamadı ve 13 maçlık yenilmeme serisi Manchester’da son buldu. Tarihinde 10 kez karşılaştığı İngiltere’yi hiç yenemeyen Türkiye, başa baş mücadele koyduğu maçta galibiyet hedefini yine gerçekleştiremedi.
