Yaşanan tartışmaların ardından atanmış Müftü Halil, yan kapıdan içeriye alındı. Öğrencilerin çoğu açılış törenini protesto ettiği için törenin yapıldığı okul bahçesi boş kaldı.
Atanmış Müftü Halil’in, tepkilere rağmen müdür yardımcısı tarafından açılış törenine davet edilmesinin protestoya yol açtığı ifade edildi.
Müslüman Cemaati Vakıflarına ait Medrese-i Hayriye’nin eğitim müfredatı ve icra yetkilerine ilişkin müdahaleler Türk azınlık temsilcilerinin tepkilerine yol açıyor. Atanmış Müftü Halil’in törene katılmak istemesi de bu müdahalelerden biri olarak değerlendiriliyor.
Yunanistan’da, Batı Trakya Müslüman Türk azınlığın dini liderleri, müftüler ve azınlığa ait vakıfların idare heyetleri, devlet tarafından yapılan atama yoluyla belirleniyor. Türk azınlık ise bu uygulamalara karşı çıkarak kendilerinin seçtiği müftülerin görev yapmasını istiyor.
Geçen yıl da öğrenciler, Türkçe ders saatlerinin azaltıldığı gerekçesiyle protesto gösterisi düzenlemişti.

Gümülcine’de, Müslüman Cemaati Vakıflarına ait Medrese-i Hayriye, ilk olarak 1455’te Sohtabaşı Ali Bey tarafından “Sohtalar Medresesi” adıyla kuruldu.
Tarihi süreç içerisinde Yunancanın da okutulması şartıyla bölgedeki diğer medreselerle birleştirilerek “Hayriye Medresesi” adını alan medrese, 1923’ten itibaren Lozan Antlaşması hükümlerine göre Yunanistan Eğitim ve Din İşleri Bakanlığına bağlandı.
Başlangıçta 3 yıllık eğitim veren medreseye, 2000-2001 eğitim yılında Yunanistan Eğitim ve Din İşleri Bakanlığı tarafından, 6 yıllık okul olarak ortaokul ve lise denkliği getirildi.
Bugün 350 civarında erkek ve kız öğrencisi bulunan ve Türkçe-Yunanca olmak üzere çift dilde eğitim veren medresede, dini derslerin yanı sıra fen dersleri okutuluyor.
