ABD’nin Missouri eyaletine bağlı St. Louis kentinde bir siyahi gencin polis tarafından öldürülmesini protesto eden göstericilere güvenlik güçlerinin biber gazıyla müdahale ettiği bildirildi.
Amerikan basınında çıkan haberlere göre, 18 yaşındaki siyahi genç Mansur Ball-Bey’in çarşamba günü polis tarafından vurularak öldürülmesinin ardından gece boyunca protesto gösterileri yapıldı. Polisin biber gazıyla müdahale ettiği göstericilerden 9’u gözaltına alındı.
St. Louis Belediye Başkanı Francis Slay ve Polis Şefi Sam Dotson, perşembe günü düzenlediği ortak basın toplantısında, protestoculara sükunet çağrısında bulundu.
Öte yandan, polisin yaptığı açıklamada öldürülen gencin silahlı olduğu iddia edildi.
İki polis memurunun bir eve arama yapmak için geldikleri sırada Ball-Bey’in kaçmaya başladığını ifade eden Dotson, siyahi gencin daha sonra silahını memurlara doğrulttuğunu, bunun üzerine iki memurun da ateş ettiğini belirtti.
Olayın yaşandığı yer, 18 yaşındaki siyahi genç Michael Brown’ın beyaz polis memuru Darren Wilson tarafından 9 Ağustos 2014’te vurularak öldürüldüğü Ferguson kasabasına 13 kilometre uzaklıkta bulunuyor.
Michael Brown cinayeti, ülke genelinde son yılların en şiddetli protesto gösterilerine neden olmuştu. Polis memuru Wilson’ın, Kasım 2014’te yerel makamlarca açılan soruşturmada büyük jüri tarafından suçsuz bulunması ve başka eyaletlerde de benzer olayların yaşanması üzerine protestolar ülke geneline yayılmıştı.
