İngiltere’nin Bristol Üniversitesinden uluslararası araştırma ekibi, Grönland kıyılarında özel sensörlerle yaptıkları ölçümlerde, buz kıtasında yaz aylarında eriyen buz örtüsünün yoğun miktarda metan gazı açığa çıkardığını belirledi.
Ekip, Grönland kıyılarının bir bölümünü oluşturan 600 kilometrekarelik deniz bölgesinde, buz örtüsü yatağından eriyerek nehirler halinde denize akan sularla birlikte 6 ton metan gazının denize karıştığını tespit etti.
Metan gazının karbondioksit ile atmosferde sera etkisi yaratan en önemli gaz olduğuna dikkati çeken araştırmacılar, yoğunluk bakımından karbondioksitten daha az miktarda bulunmasına karşın, 20 ila 28 kat daha fazla sera etkisine yol açma potansiyeli barındıran metan gazının oksidasyonla açığa çıkmasının atmosfer sıcaklığı arttırıcı etki yaratacağı uyarısında bulundu.
Metan, mikro organizmaların oksijen yokluğunda organik materyali dönüştürmesiyle ortaya çıkıyor. Metanın küresel ısınmaya olası etkilerine dair araştırmalar bugüne kadar daha çok kutup altı donmuş topraklarda sıkışan metan içeriğinin açığa çıkma olasılığına odaklanıyordu. Ancak yeni çalışma buz tabakaları arasındaki oksijensiz ortamda da yoğun miktarda metan gazı oluştuğunu ortaya çıkardı.
